There are a number of mnemonics that can be used to remember the causes and clinical features of osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/endoconsult.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/osteogenesis-imperfecta-bdsm-mnemonic-min.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Introduction<\/h2>\n<p>OI is caused by autosomal dominant mutations in type I collagen genes (<strong>COL1A1<\/strong> and <strong>COL1A2<\/strong>) in up to 85% of affected individuals. The initial classification systems proposed by <em>Sillence et al<\/em> has been further complicated by the discovery of additional genetic aberrations in type I collagen gene transcription, translation, and posttranslational modification. Therefore, a shift has been made from a mainly clinicopathophysiologic classification system to one based on genetics.<\/p>\n<h2>Mnemonics for OI<\/h2>\n<p>The skeletal features of this condition can be remembered using the mnemonic <strong>&#8220;FOG.&#8221;<\/strong> This stands for &#8220;frequent <strong>f<\/strong>ractures,&#8221; &#8220;<strong>o<\/strong>steopenia,&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>g<\/strong>rowth retardation.&#8221; Patients with OI often experience multiple fractures, particularly during childhood. They may also have osteopenia, or reduced bone density, which can lead to an increased risk of fractures.<\/p>\n<p>Growth retardation is another common feature of OI, and patients may be significantly shorter than average. In addition to these clinical features, patients with OI may also have blue sclerae, hearing loss, and joint deformities.<\/p>\n<p>Another mnemonic for osteogenesis imperfecta is the somewhat controversial memory aid, BDSM \ud83d\ude0a. These clinical features represent the classic phenotype of osteogenesis imperfecta.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>B :<\/strong> Blue Sclera<\/li>\n<li><strong>D :<\/strong> Dental imperfections (classically known as <strong>dentinogenesis imperfecta<\/strong> with discolored and weak teeth)<\/li>\n<li><strong>S :<\/strong> Sensorineural hearing loss<\/li>\n<li><strong>M :<\/strong> Multiple fractures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sillence types I through to IV are referred to as <strong>classic OI<\/strong> since these subtypes of OI involve autosomal dominant mutations in type I collagen (specifically <strong>COL1A1<\/strong> and <strong>COL1A2<\/strong>)<\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-72\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-72\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Sillence Type <\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Features<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">Mnemonic<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\">Type I<\/td><td class=\"column-2\">Blue sclera, Sensorineural hearing loss.
