Endocrine Journal Club is a monthly discussion of essential studies in endocrinology. Although the emphasis is placed on recent publications, we will occasionally review landmark studies of yesteryear. Each study is summarized via a comprehensive visual abstract with an additional brief blog-style post. Kindly register (sign in via your social media account to make it a seamless process) to comment on the post.
Critical appraisal
“The process of carefully and systematically examining research to judge its trustworthiness, and its value and relevance in a particular context”
Of course, no trial is perfect. We can always find points to criticize in a trial, but this does not necessarily mean that the results cannot be trusted or applied in practice. However, sometimes authors over-interpret their results and ignore the weaknesses of their trial. Critical appraisal allows us to assess in a systematic way how strong or weak a paper is in answering a clinically relevant question, and so decide whether (and how) the results and conclusions can be applied to clinical practice. It is usually applied to a paper that has already been published rather than one in preparation.
