DCCT : The effect of intensive treatment of diabetes on the development and progression of long-term complications in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

• Intensive glycemic control, defined as 3 or more multiple daily injections of insulin or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion with an HbA1c goal of 7%, reduces microvascular complication rates.

• The greatest reduction in microvascular events was seen with retinopathy (adjusted mean risk of 76%)
